Zoom Lecture:

OCEANS & THE TECHNOLOGY TO MONITOR THEM: WHY IT MATTERS

7PM, Wednesday, September 9th

Ocean Science and Technology in Support of Human Well-Being,

Economic Prosperity, and National Security

Join us at 7PM on September 9th in welcoming Dr. Dennis McGillicuddy for an FPMN encore appearance where he will make the case for why ocean science is essential to Florida’s economy and public safety. Dr. McGillicuddy will explain how Florida’s marine industries depend on healthy oceans, with tourism, fisheries, and coastal businesses all affected by threats like red tides and Sargassum blooms. He'll highlight how scientific tools—satellites, algae monitoring, and ocean sensors—help predict and manage these risks and warns that cutting support for ocean science would leave Floridians more vulnerable.

Check out the editorial that Dr. McGillicuddy wrote on this topic last year for the Tampa Bay Times here.

This program open to FPMN as well as the general public. Tell all your friends and family members about it. Let's pack the Zoom room with ocean lovers!

Dennis J. McGillicuddy, Jr. is a Senior Scientist in the Department of Applied Ocean Physics and Engineering at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. His primary research interest is the interface between fluid dynamics and the biology of the sea. He has pursued physical-biological-chemical interactions in four contexts: the role of eddies in biogeo-chemical cycling of the open ocean, impacts of coastal circulation on zooplankton dynamics, the dynamics of harmful algal blooms, and larval dispersal in deep-sea vent communities. Dr. McGillicuddy currently serves as the Director of Woods Hole Center for Oceans and Human Health and as WHOI's Chief Science Officer.
